HOYER Guitars, Established in 1874 - Bringing the Past to the Future, by Martin Ritter, Ritter Europe Ltd. /UK

guitar, classic, dreadnought, electric, bass, acoustic, jazz, semi acoustic, hollow body, martin ritter

The history of the HOYER guitar brand began in 1874, when Franz Hoyer opened his own workshop in Schönbach/Egerland (Czech Republic). After making lutes and zithers in the beginning, HOYER changed production more and more to classic and folk guitars.

HOYER was one of first German guitar companies which printed a brochure after the second world war in 1948. The arch-top models Herr im Frack and Solist were very popular professional instruments during that time. Both models are now collectors items with cult status.

Today, 135 years later HOYER Guitars looks back to an eventful and inspiring history of guitar building and craftsmanship. HOYER Guitars is a one of a kind brand. Our team of luthiers and product specialists are passionate about their work and aim to bring HOYER to the global market and endeavour to preserve and build on it's long heritage.

Hoyer Eagle

The new Hoyer Eagle is a reissue of the Hoyer HG657 originally launched at the end of the ‘70s. After a long time using only model numbers, the Hoyer Eagle was one of the first models to have an additional name added to the model number - 'Eagle'. Being the first model of this new era it featured a multi-ply through neck with Mahogany wings. The Hoyer Scale of 630mm is typical for this guitar. Special features include the eagle headstock inlay and the eagle shaped fingerboard inlays, which in the ‘70s were made of brass. Other features, such as the shape of the headstock, the construction of the controls and a burr walnut veneer on top for some models differentiated the Hoyer models from other electric guitars of the era. In the mid ‘80s the "Eagle III" was launched, featuring a modified body shape, and unlike the "Original-Eagle" (I and II), no bindings. It was built in very small quantities.

Hoyer Black Lady / Hoyer White Lady

At first glance the “Ladies”, which were first introduced at the end of the ‘70s, resembled in appearance American standard models. However, on closer inspection they differ in all dimensions, radii, scale, design, materials, and method of assembly. Hence the sound and playability is completely different. The “Ladies” shared the same basic construction with other Hoyer models introduced in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s - multilayer through neck with mahogany wings. Like all Hoyer guitars they have a scale of 630mm. Very characteristic are the zebra bindings of the body, neck and headstock. Originally they were equipped with single coils but are now equipped with two Humbuckers. The” Black Lady” shot to fame in the ‘80s. During the same period many Custom Shop variations were built based on the “Lady” featuring honey burst colour and different pickup configurations.

Hoyer Ern

The Ern is a newly developed luxury version of the Eagle, with some features inherited from other ancestors in the Hoyer product history. An Eagle model with a very similar shape called “Model HG658” was produced in the mid ‘70s. However, this guitar had a set neck, 3 Humbuckers and a tailpiece. During Hoyer's Custom Shop period in the ‘80s the company built a variation of an American standard model with an arched, flamed maple top and the typical Hoyer through neck with 630mm scale. The new Ern model features the body shaping of the new Eagle, but with a 15mm thick solid flamed maple top. It also features a different neck angle as well as a different method of string suspension.

Hoyer Arrow

After V-Shaped models became more popular in the ‘70s, Hoyer started to produce a Arrow-model called 5069. Initially the guitar was manufactured with a set neck, but was replaced at the end of the ‘70s with a 3 piece through neck version. A short time later production of the set neck version was discontinued. At the same time the “Arrow” replaced the model 5069. A later variation was the “Super 82” with “Korina” body and binding at the top. Both models were very popular and were offered in many variations and pickup configurations.
